Five Grand on the coin toss

Actress Janet Jones said Thursday that she never placed a wager on behalf of her husband, Phoenix Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky. Addressing a betting scandal that led to the arrest of Coyotes associate Rick Tocchet, she released a statement, saying, "Other than the occasional horse race, my husband does not bet on any sports." Reached by phone by USA TODAY, Jones said the statement would be her only comment: "I would like to say a thousand things, but I can't."

On August 15, 1935, Wiley Post, the first pilot to fly solo around the world, and American humorist Will Rogers were killed when Post's plane crashed on takeoff from a lagoon near Point Barrow, in Alaska.
