Virginia Voters Snub the Shrub

Jerry Kilgore finally relented the night before the election and had Bush come to his state to campaign. It didn't help and in fact, it more than likely did what Kilgore was afraid of; It, the new Bush curse, cost him an election.
Democrat Timothy M. Kaine easily defeated Republican Jerry W. Kilgore for governor last night, dealing the GOP a blow in a second consecutive gubernatorial election. The contest for governor was also a defeat for President Bush, who put his prestige on the line Monday night by making an eleventh-hour campaign stop for Kilgore.
