Four U.S. Marines Die in Western Iraq

Two bombs exploded minutes apart Tuesday near a central Baghdad square, killing at least seven people and wounding 20 as violence increased ahead of a major Shiite holy day later this week. Also Tuesday, the U.S. military said four Marines died in separate explosions in western Iraq and masked gunmen killed a Sunni Arab cleric who headed the city council in the western city of Fallujah. 2,258

On August 15, 1935, Wiley Post, the first pilot to fly solo around the world, and American humorist Will Rogers were killed when Post's plane crashed on takeoff from a lagoon near Point Barrow, in Alaska.
